Indiana's Community Crossings Matching Grant Program has allocated over $4.4 million in state funding to local communities for road and bridge projects, as announced by State Representative Lindsay Patterson of Brookville. This initiative aims to support road reconstruction, bridge preservation, intersection improvements, and other infrastructure projects across the state.
This year, 245 communities in Indiana will benefit from more than $200 million in state matching grants. "With these grants we can move beyond patchwork and other inadequate solutions to invest in better upgrades for our roads," said Patterson. "Safer, more durable roadways will benefit everyone and reduce the risk of accidents caused by high congestion and poor conditions."
Indiana has been recognized as the top state for overall road conditions by ConsumerAffairs, citing its low rate of traffic fatalities and high-quality roads.
Among the grant recipients are Connersville with $389,162; Fayette County receiving $1.5 million; Franklin County with $1.1 million; Laurel obtaining $73,994; and Union County awarded $1.3 million.
Patterson noted that smaller municipalities must provide a 25 percent match in local funds to qualify for funding, while larger communities are required to provide a 50 percent match. Additionally, 50 percent of available matching funds must be awarded annually to communities within counties with populations of 50,000 or less. Since its inception in 2016, Community Crossings has distributed over $2 billion to enhance local roads and bridges.
