LaSaundra Alexander, District College Specialist for the Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) Postsecondary Readiness Department, is featured in this week's IPS Employee Spotlight. With a background in social work and higher education, she holds a bachelor's degree in social work and a master's degree in student development and administration.
Alexander's career includes roles as an instructional assistant at an elementary school, a life skills specialist in mental health, and working at Ivy Tech Community College's registrar’s office. Her dedication to student success is evident since joining IPS in 2023 as she supports students across four high schools: George Washington, Crispus Attucks, Arsenal Technical, and Shortridge.
She assists students with college enrollment processes such as completing FAFSA applications and advising on 21st Century Scholars’ requirements. Additionally, she collaborates with colleges to build programs while fostering a college-going culture within schools.
In her own words about working at IPS: "IPS puts students first and offers a plethora of opportunities for students and families that are not offered at other school districts." Reflecting on her experience at IPS compared to previous roles, she noted: "My colleagues and I make sure our students have a secure plan for after graduation."
Education holds significant importance for Alexander: "Education empowers individuals with knowledge and skills... I have always been drawn to the helping and education profession." She finds rewarding moments when seeing senior students go off to college: "When I check in with them halfway through their first semester it is great to hear they are doing well."
Her daily approach involves maintaining positivity: "I approach my job daily with a positive attitude... The students motivate me to do better each day!" Regarding the Rebuilding Stronger initiative, Alexander commented: "I think the rebuilding stronger initiative is great! Our students deserve the best experiences."
For new educators or staff members joining IPS, her advice is clear: "The advice I would give is to network, make connections, and don’t be afraid of change."
