Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) has highlighted the journey of Dr. Tameka Jones, an inspiring alumni story as part of their Alumni Spotlight series. Dr. Jones, a 1999 graduate from Arsenal Technical High School, shared insights into her educational journey and how IPS has influenced her career and life.
After high school, Dr. Jones pursued higher education at Fisk University, earning a bachelor’s degree, and continued to IUPUI for her master's. Reflecting on her connection with IPS, she says, “I’ve remained connected to IPS as I have children who have attended IPS schools.” She advises current students to find programs that align with their career goals. “My recommendation would be to seek out programs that can put you on the path of your future career goals.”
Dr. Jones continued her education by obtaining a Doctor of Medicine at the IU School of Medicine. She completed her training at Community Health Network and now serves as a primary care physician in Indianapolis. Her time in IPS’s medical magnet program was pivotal in her career choice, as she explains, “Attending the medical magnet at Tech solidified my dreams of becoming a physician.”
The challenges she faced as a student, including a lack of guiding support, taught her to be self-directed in her academic pursuits. This experience significantly contributed to her personal growth. “Having to do the most with the least amount of resources... built character,” Dr. Jones stated.
She fondly recalls the influence of Mrs. June Moss, one of her teachers, saying, “Mrs. June Moss was THE best... She played no games and expected you to put your best effort forward.”
Dr. Jones remains a testament to the impact of public schooling in shaping successful leaders and professionals. Her achievements underscore IPS’s capacity to prepare students exceptionally well for higher education and beyond.
