Ella Hereth, a math instructional coach at Harshman Middle School, has been awarded the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST). President Joe Biden announced the 2024 recipients of this award and the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring (PAESMEM) on Wednesday. In total, 336 educators and mentors nationwide were recognized for their contributions to education.
The PAEMST is regarded as the highest honor given by the U.S. government to K-12 math and science teachers. It celebrates educators who have demonstrated mastery in their subjects and can inspire students effectively.
Hereth is currently in her eighth year with Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS). She emphasizes equitable access to advanced math instruction. "The way we taught math 30 years ago isn’t what we need today," she stated. Hereth advocates for critical thinking over rote learning due to changes in standards, tests, and career demands influenced by advancements like AI.
In her teaching approach, Hereth focuses on student-centered, problem-based learning. "I’m passionate about fostering conversation, dialogue, and movement in math education," she said. Her journey at Harshman began in 2012 before returning in 2020; she also teaches high school geometry to eighth graders.
Her dedication aligns with her award recognition amid challenges faced by public schools. "At a time when public schools are under attack, it’s especially meaningful to earn this recognition as a teacher in a public school district," Hereth expressed.
Amy Moore, principal of Harshman Middle School, highlighted the importance of Hereth's achievement: "This recognition highlights Harshman’s unwavering commitment to academic excellence." Moore acknowledged that teachers like Hereth ensure students receive quality education.
Harshman Middle School supports its staff with professional development opportunities and resources aimed at helping teachers succeed. "We foster a culture of recognition and support," Moore noted.
