At Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS), the achievements and journeys of alumni are celebrated through the IPS Alumni Spotlight. This initiative aims to highlight the stories of former students, showcasing how their time at IPS shaped their paths.
Recently, Patrick Cole, a 1982 graduate of John Marshall High School, shared his reflections on how IPS influenced his life and career. Cole is now a music teacher at James A. Garfield School 31, continuing to contribute to the community that inspired him.
In discussing his educational foundation and career aspirations, Cole said: "I was a product of IPS’s Music Department, and it paved the way for me to become an IPS music teacher for over 30 years."
Cole highlighted two teachers who had a significant impact on him during his time at IPS: "My fourth-grade teacher, Sarah Francis, and my high school choir teacher, Cyndy Hartshorn, had a tremendous impact on my life."
Reflecting on his education's influence on personal and professional development since graduating, Cole noted: "My time at IPS inspired me to become a music teacher and provide children with the same enriching experiences I had performing as a student."
When asked about specific skills gained at IPS that have been valuable in his career, he stated: "Music has been the most valuable skill I gained at IPS."
Cole also offered advice for current students: "Stay open to trying new things and make the most of your educational experience. Pass on what you learn to others."
Discussing challenges faced during his time at IPS, Cole mentioned financial issues but added: "Finances and budgetary issues were challenges, but working through them helped me grow personally and professionally."
Finally, when asked about initiatives or projects he has been involved in to improve opportunities for current students, Cole responded: "Teaching music—whether instrumental, vocal or general—has been my way of giving back and improving opportunities for today’s students."
