Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) have informed families and staff about a significant cybersecurity data breach involving their student data software vendor, PowerSchool. The breach has compromised some of the student and employee data from IPS.

PowerSchool is widely used across numerous school districts in the United States and Canada, many of which have been affected by this unauthorized access. This incident was not exclusive to Indianapolis and could not have been prevented at a local level.

The security of student and staff data is a priority for IPS. Upon learning about the breach, the IPS Technology Department launched an internal investigation to assess the extent of compromised information.

Dr. Aleesia Johnson, Superintendent of Indianapolis Public Schools, stated that "we are also working with our Indiana agencies and law enforcement partners to ensure ongoing safety of Indianapolis Public Schools data." She advised reviewing "Best Practices Following a Data Breach" as a precautionary measure.

The IPS Technology Department plans further discussions with PowerSchool regarding the breach. Additional details will be shared as they become available. Dr. Johnson anticipates that PowerSchool will offer resources for those impacted by the breach, which will also be communicated when ready.
