A resolution sponsored by State Representative Mark Genda aims to honor the memory of fallen Boone County Sheriff's Deputy Jacob M. Pickett by renaming a portion of Interstate 65 in Boone County. The proposal was unanimously approved by the House Roads and Transportation Committee.

Genda's resolution calls for the Indiana Department of Transportation to rename the stretch between mile markers 137 and 138 as the "Deputy Jacob M. Pickett Memorial Mile." Genda remarked, "Deputy Pickett dedicated his life to protecting our community and we will be forever grateful. I'm honored to support this resolution as a way to remember and honor his legacy and sacrifice."

Deputy Pickett began his law enforcement career with the Marion County Sheriff's Office, later moving to Tipton County before joining Boone County in 2015. His roles included serving as a taser instructor, K-9 team leader, K-9 handler, and member of the Fraternal Order of Police #110.

Tragically, on March 2, 2018, Pickett was killed while attempting to apprehend three suspects during a police pursuit alongside his K-9 partner Brik.

In response to her husband's death, Jennifer Pickett established the Jacob Pickett Response Organization. This initiative supports other law enforcement families during difficult times. More information can be found at remembering626.org.

The Senate Concurrent Resolution 13 is now set for consideration on the House floor. Legislative proceedings can be followed at iga.in.gov.
