Lori Hart, the K-8 Elementary and Middle School Counseling Coordinator at Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS), recently shared insights into her career in an interview. With over two decades of experience in school counseling and student services, Hart has worked both in Southern California and Indiana. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of California, Davis, a Master’s degree from Chapman University, and a Doctorate in Education from Oakland City University.
Hart has been with IPS for three years. Her current role involves coordinating programming for approximately 20,000 students across 40 buildings. She also acts as a liaison to enhance postsecondary awareness within the K-8 space.
"I was intentional in my decision to work at IPS," she stated, citing personal and professional fulfillment as key motivators. The COVID-19 pandemic's impact on student services has reinforced her commitment to education recovery efforts.
Hart appreciates IPS's focus on closing the equity gap. "Identifying equity gaps necessitates an impartial perspective that elevates diverse voices," she explained, aligning with her advocacy for diverse student populations.
Reflecting on achievements at IPS, Hart highlighted progress with the Xello Curriculum and the adoption of the Hatchings framework. A rewarding moment came when a principal praised the ASCA National Model's impact on students.
Hart describes herself as a servant leader who values team-oriented approaches. She advises new educators at IPS to engage with the community: "Building relationships and collaborating together is both rewarding and fun."
