With the winter season approaching, health experts from Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) are encouraging families to stay active together. Kathy Langdon, an IPS Health and Wellness Coach, along with Andrew Bartolacci, who was recently recognized as Indiana’s Middle School Physical Education Teacher of the Year by INSHAPE, have shared ideas to make exercising enjoyable during colder months.

"Exercise is essential, no matter the season," Langdon emphasized. "It keeps kids strong, builds cardiovascular health, reduces risks of obesity and diabetes, and improves mental health. Staying active, especially during gray, colder days, is so important."

Bartolacci, who works at T.C. Howe Middle School and is a leader on the IPS wellness team, advises families not to focus too much on time constraints.

"Don’t feel pressured to block off a full hour. Instead, aim for several 15-20 minute bursts of movement throughout the day—and keep it fun. Most kids enjoy exercise when it’s part of a game."

Langdon also highlighted the importance of family involvement in fitness activities: "We should all do our best to ensure that our families have a happy, healthy, and active holiday season," she said. "The most important thing is spending quality time together while taking care of your well-being."
