U.S. Senators Todd Young, Mitt Romney, Catherine Cortez Masto, James Lankford, Sherrod Brown, and John Cornyn have introduced a bipartisan bill titled the American Economic Independence Act. The proposed legislation aims to address national security risks associated with economic integration between the United States and China.

The bill mandates that the President deliver a detailed threat analysis to Congress concerning national security vulnerabilities in several key sectors such as financial services, artificial intelligence, critical minerals, and manufacturing. Following this analysis, the Executive Branch would be responsible for offering recommendations on how to mitigate these risks.

Senator Young emphasized the importance of reducing reliance on foreign supply chains: "In recent years, we have experienced the economic and national security risks associated with relying on a strategic rival’s supply chains for a wide variety of industries." He added that "Our bipartisan bill would promote American economic independence and help mitigate any potential threats that may stem from future economic integration with China."

The full text of the legislation is available for review.
