Arsenal Technical High School's automotive program is set to restore a classic 1951 Chevrolet Deluxe, thanks to a collaboration with Carvana and racing legend Jimmie Johnson. This initiative provides students with hands-on experience in automotive repair and restoration.
The project involves rebuilding the vintage car, which will be displayed at the World of Wheels/Motorama event at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in March. Dennis Bailey, one of the school's automotive instructors, highlighted the educational value of working on older vehicles. "Although today’s cars are more complex, the fundamental systems—engines, electrical, suspension, and brakes—are based on the same principles as older vehicles," Bailey said.
Carvana has partnered with Johnson to support automotive education by donating equipment and funds to Arsenal Tech. The contribution includes funding for a new vehicle lift in the school's shop, enhancing students' practical learning opportunities.
Students have already replaced the brake system on the Chevy Deluxe and will soon work on its electrical harness and spare engine rebuild. "The new equipment will be integrated simply by allowing more students to participate in activities," Bailey explained.
Bailey also noted that meeting NASCAR star Jimmie Johnson serves as an inspiration for students. “It inspires them to see how a normal teenager like Jimmie became a household name in racing,” he said.
