Nominations are open for Indiana's inaugural award honoring first responders who are killed or seriously injured in the line of duty. State Representatives Bruce Borders and Shane Lindauer announced the launch of the Hoosier First Responder Medal of Honor, which will recognize firefighters, emergency medical responders, law enforcement officers, and others who show bravery beyond the call of duty.
"Recognizing the extraordinary courage and dedication of our first responders is a small way to say thank you for their commitment," said Borders. "These are individuals who run toward danger, and they deserve our deepest respect and gratitude."
Eligible candidates include Indiana-based law enforcement officers, firefighters, corrections officers, public safety telecommunicators, EMS workers, emergency management service providers, county coroners, deputy coroners, public safety agency employees or volunteers involved in rapid emergency response.
"First responders who put their lives on the line and make tremendous sacrifices often receive little public recognition," stated Lindauer. "This award will help us all honor them for answering the call when it's needed most."
