Legislation authored by State Representative Tim O'Brien aimed at strengthening economic ties and supporting trade between Indiana and Ireland has passed the Indiana Senate. This measure, known as House Enrolled Act 1489, proposes the creation of an Indiana-Ireland trade commission intended to advance bilateral trade and investment.

"Indiana has long had strong cultural and economic ties to Ireland and establishing an Indiana-Ireland trade commission would strengthen that foundation," O'Brien stated. "This commission could open doors for new business opportunities, encourage investment and bolster our state's position on the global stage. I'm proud to author this bill and see it pass the legislature this session."

In 2023, Indiana imported goods exceeding $20 billion from Ireland, positioning the country as Indiana's largest importing partner. The state currently hosts 52 Irish-based companies spanning 24 counties.

The commission, as outlined in the legislation, would be chosen by the governor and Statehouse leadership, comprising 13 members from various entities including the General Assembly, the Indiana Chamber of Commerce, higher education institutions, and the Irish American community.

House Enrolled Act 1489 secured support from former Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern and current Ireland Senate member Mark Daly.
