Nominations are now open for Indiana's inaugural award recognizing first responders who have been killed or seriously injured while performing their duties. This initiative is made possible by legislation supported by local lawmakers.
State Representative Alan Morrison emphasized the significance of the Hoosier First Responder Medal of Honor, which acknowledges firefighters, emergency medical responders, law enforcement officers, and others who demonstrate exceptional bravery and risk their lives beyond the call of duty. "First responders dedicate their lives to protecting ours, often putting themselves in harm's way," Morrison stated. "This award is a meaningful tribute to the exceptional men and women who serve our state with such courage and determination."
Eligibility for this honor extends to Indiana first responders including law enforcement officers, firefighters, corrections officers, public safety telecommunicators, EMS workers, emergency management service providers, county coroners and deputy coroners, as well as public safety agency employees or volunteers involved in rapid emergency response.
State Representative Bob Heaton expressed his admiration for these individuals: "Our first responders are true heroes who act with courage and compassion in the toughest situations. This award is a powerful way to recognize their outstanding commitment to protecting our families and neighborhoods."
Additionally, State Representative Bruce Borders remarked on the importance of acknowledging these efforts: "Recognizing the extraordinary courage and dedication of our first responders is a small way to say thank you for their commitment. These are individuals who run toward danger, and they deserve our deepest respect and gratitude."
