Nominations are now open for Indiana's inaugural award recognizing first responders who have been killed or seriously injured in the line of duty. This initiative is a result of legislation supported by State Representative Matt Lehman from Berne.
The Hoosier First Responder Medal of Honor is designed to honor firefighters, emergency medical responders, law enforcement officers, and others who demonstrate exceptional bravery and courage at great personal risk beyond their call of duty.
"Being a first responder requires an immense amount of courage, and we greatly appreciate their sacrifices and dedication to keeping our communities safe," said Lehman. "This medal is a symbol of gratitude to the firefighters, emergency medical services and law enforcement personnel who fearlessly confront danger and put others above themselves."
Eligibility for the award extends to Indiana first responders including law enforcement officers, firefighters, corrections officers, public safety telecommunicators, EMS workers, emergency management service providers, county coroners, deputy coroners, public safety agency employees or volunteers whose roles involve rapid emergency response.
Further information on nominating someone for the Hoosier First Responder Medal of Honor can be found through the Indiana Department of Homeland Security at in.gov/dhs/special-recognitions.
