Nominations are open for Indiana's inaugural award recognizing first responders who have been killed or seriously injured while performing their duties. This initiative is the result of legislation supported by State Representative Dave Hall from Norman.

The Hoosier First Responder Medal of Honor is designed to honor firefighters, emergency medical responders, law enforcement personnel, and others who demonstrate extraordinary bravery and courage at the risk of their own lives, exceeding the call of duty.

"Every day, first responders put their lives on the line to protect and serve our communities," said Hall. "This new award is a tribute to the bravery and selflessness of those who go beyond the call of duty, risking everything to keep us safe."

Eligibility for this recognition extends to Indiana first responders such as law enforcement officers, firefighters, corrections officers, public safety telecommunicators, EMS workers, emergency management service providers, county coroners, deputy coroners, public safety agency employees or volunteers whose responsibilities include rapid emergency response.

Further information about nominating someone for the Hoosier First Responder Medal of Honor can be found on the Indiana Department of Homeland Security's website at in.gov/dhs/special-recognitions.
