Nominations are now open for Indiana's inaugural award to honor first responders who have been killed or seriously injured in public service. This initiative follows legislation backed by State Representative Alan Morrison from Brazil, Indiana.
The Hoosier First Responder Medal of Honor aims to recognize firefighters, emergency medical responders, law enforcement officers, and other first responders who display exceptional bravery and courage, risking their lives beyond the call of duty.
"First responders dedicate their lives to protecting ours, often putting themselves in harm's way," stated Morrison. "This award is a meaningful tribute to the exceptional men and women who serve our state with such courage and determination."
Eligible candidates for the award include various roles within Indiana's first responder community. These roles encompass law enforcement officers, firefighters, corrections officers, public safety telecommunicators, EMS workers, emergency management service providers, county coroners and deputy coroners, as well as public safety agency employees or volunteers engaged in rapid emergency response.
For those interested in nominating someone for the Hoosier First Responder Medal of Honor or learning about other recognitions available through the Indiana Department of Homeland Security, further information can be found at in.gov/dhs/special-recognitions.
