Nominations are now open for Indiana's inaugural award recognizing first responders who have been killed or seriously injured in the line of duty. This announcement comes from State Representatives Cindy Ledbetter and Shane Lindauer.

Ledbetter explained that the Hoosier First Responder Medal of Honor is intended to honor firefighters, emergency medical responders, law enforcement officers, and others who demonstrate exceptional bravery and risk their lives beyond the call of duty. "First responders are our first call when an accident occurs," Ledbetter stated. "These men and women who go above and beyond the call of duty deserve recognition for their bravery."

To qualify for this award, nominees must be Indiana first responders. Eligible roles include law enforcement officers, firefighters, corrections officers, public safety telecommunicators, EMS workers, emergency management service providers, county coroners, deputy coroners, public safety agency employees, or volunteers with duties involving rapid emergency response.

Lindauer emphasized the importance of acknowledging these individuals: "First responders who put their lives on the line and make tremendous sacrifices often receive little public recognition," he said. "This award will help us all honor them for answering the call when it's needed most."

Further information on how to nominate someone for the Hoosier First Responder Medal of Honor can be found through the Indiana Department of Homeland Security at in.gov/dhs/special-recognitions.
