Nominations are now open for Indiana's inaugural award recognizing first responders who have been killed or seriously injured in the line of duty. This initiative is a result of legislation supported by local lawmakers.
"Our first responders go above and beyond in the name of service," stated State Representative Michelle Davis (R-Whiteland). "This award is a heartfelt way to honor those who go above and beyond in their service to our communities."
State Representative Craig Haggard (R-Mooresville) explained that the Hoosier First Responder Medal of Honor is intended for firefighters, emergency medical responders, law enforcement officers, and others who demonstrate gallantry and intrepidity at great personal risk beyond their call of duty.
"Our communities depend on first responders who never hesitate to put their lives on the line," said Haggard, a member of the House Veterans Affairs and Public Safety Committee. "Honoring their bravery through this award is just one way we can express our appreciation for their tireless service and sacrifice."
Eligibility for the award extends to Indiana first responders such as law enforcement officers, firefighters, corrections officers, public safety telecommunicators, EMS workers, emergency management service providers, county coroners, deputy coroners, public safety agency employees, or volunteers involved in rapid emergency response.
"We ask so much from our first responders, who day after day face the dangers no one else can," remarked State Representative Robb Greene (R-Shelbyville). "This formal recognition is a way to give thanks and honor their sacrifices."
"First responders embody the spirit of service, showing up when our communities need them most," added State Representative Peggy Mayfield (R-Martinsville). "This award is a testament to their bravery and acknowledgment of the risks they take every day."
