Nominations are now open for Indiana's inaugural award recognizing first responders who have been killed or seriously injured while performing public service duties. This initiative is made possible through legislation supported by State Representative Beau Baird of Greencastle.
The Hoosier First Responder Medal of Honor aims to honor individuals such as firefighters, emergency medical responders, and law enforcement officers who have shown exceptional bravery and courage, risking their lives beyond the call of duty.
"Our first responders show incredible courage and commitment every day, putting their lives on the line to keep us safe," said Baird. "This award is a way to honor their unwavering dedication and ensure their sacrifices are never forgotten."
Eligibility for the award extends to Indiana first responders including law enforcement officers, firefighters, corrections officers, public safety telecommunicators, EMS workers, emergency management service providers, county coroners, deputy coroners, public safety agency employees, or volunteers whose responsibilities involve rapid emergency response.
Further information on how to nominate someone for this medal and other recognitions offered by the Indiana Department of Homeland Security can be found at in.gov/dhs/special-recognitions.
