Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) has launched the IPS Alumni Spotlight to honor its graduates and highlight their diverse paths. The initiative aims to celebrate former students by sharing their experiences, achievements, and interests.
Ted Meek, a 1968 graduate of Arlington High School, recently shared his journey with IPS. After completing high school, Meek attended Indiana University and earned a bachelor's degree in 1972. During his college years, he worked as an emergency room technician at Community Hospital in Indianapolis, where he met his future wife, Julie (Lukens) Meek.
Reflecting on his time at IPS, Meek said: "It gave me a solid foundation to prepare me for college and my work life." He recalled influential teachers such as Mrs. McGrath, who was "a great math teacher," Mrs. Payne, who emphasized "the importance of the Constitution," and Mr. Wallace, who sparked his interest in microbiology.
Meek credited his education at IPS with providing essential skills for navigating a competitive world. He highlighted the value of writing business letters and proposals along with developing strong math skills necessary for accurate business transactions.
Discussing challenges faced during his time at IPS, Meek noted that competing in class and athletics taught him that "every day does not guarantee success."
Meek's career led him into the commercial property industry from which he recently retired.
