On March 1, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) updated its guidelines regarding precautions for respiratory viruses. The new recommendations are designed to prevent the spread of illnesses more effectively. Both the Indiana Department of Health (IDOH) and Marion County Public Health Department (MCPHD) have adopted these changes, which Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) has also implemented.

A significant change in the guidelines is that a mandatory five-day isolation period for individuals testing positive for COVID-19 is no longer required. Instead, if an individual tests positive or shows symptoms of a respiratory illness, they should follow specific steps provided by health authorities.

While isolation is not compulsory anymore, individuals are encouraged to take extra precautions for at least five days after symptoms begin. This approach emphasizes personal responsibility while aiming to reduce disruptions and continue mitigating the spread of respiratory viruses within communities.

Screening tools for schools and parents remain available as part of ongoing efforts to manage public health effectively.
