Indianapolis Public School students at Arsenal Technical High School have a new opportunity to pursue careers in early childhood education, thanks to the Indiana Department of Education. The state's ECE Registered Teacher Apprenticeship provides a structured pathway for high school students aiming to enter this growing field.
Jennifer Berry, the career and technical education pathway director at IPS, stated, "The program is designed to help students jumpstart their careers in early childhood education, providing them with the skills and certifications needed to enter a field that is in high demand." She emphasized that participation prepares students for success in a profession vital for shaping young lives.
The program offers hands-on training crucial for skill development, allowing students to explore the early childhood education profession from an early age. Two Arsenal Tech students will begin their apprenticeships this fall at Shepherd Community Center.
The apprenticeship curriculum aligns with Indiana's Next Level Programs of Study Early Childhood Education career pathway. This alignment ensures that students are ready for roles in early childhood education and equipped with credentials recognized in both post-secondary education and career environments. Participants can earn dual credit and obtain their Child Development Associate® credential.
This initiative supports Indiana's broader efforts like HB 1002, promoting career-connected learning opportunities. By linking students with employers and educational institutions, it aids them in making informed decisions about their future plans.
