Everyone knows a neighbor who consistently goes out of their way to assist others, embodying the spirit of community and hospitality. Frank Hayes, a native of Jefferson County, Indiana, is one such individual. For years, Hayes has dedicated himself to aiding some of Indiana's most vulnerable children. Recently, his contributions were acknowledged with the Golden Hoosier Award.
Established in 2008, this award recognizes older Hoosiers who go above and beyond in their efforts to help others. It is the highest honor bestowed by the state on its senior citizens.
Hayes actively supports The Children's Advocacy Center of Southeastern Indiana, a nonprofit organization that assists child abuse victims. His involvement includes making donations, restocking the children's resource room at the center, and participating in annual fundraising campaigns.
"Because of his efforts to help support those in crisis," many children have felt cared for during difficult times. Hayes' dedication to assisting these young individuals and supporting The Children's Advocacy Center is described as a "truly selfless act."
Hayes was one of 17 Hoosiers recently honored with the Golden Hoosier Award. Eligibility for this award requires nominees to be Indiana residents aged 65 or older who have volunteered in their community for at least three years.
Although nominations are currently closed for the Golden Hoosier Award, those interested in nominating someone or learning more about it can visit in.gov/lg or email goldenhoosiers@fssa.in.gov with questions.
