Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) celebrates its graduates and their diverse journeys through the IPS Alumni Spotlight. This initiative aims to highlight former students' experiences, accomplishments, and personal interests.

Joya Carpenter, a 2008 graduate of Arsenal Technical High School, recently became a licensed practical nurse (LPN) with plans to pursue a career in long-term healthcare. Reflecting on her journey within the state’s largest school district, Carpenter shared insights about how her time at IPS shaped her educational foundation and career aspirations.

"The Health Professions Magnet at Arsenal Tech helped shape and mold me," she stated. "The program exposed me to the health field at a young age. I obtained the knowledge of medical terminology, dosage calc, nursing skills, etc. I earned my CNA license in 2007 before graduating from Tech in 2008."

Carpenter also acknowledged several influential teachers during her time at IPS. "Mrs. Moss (Rest in Heaven) left her mark on my life along with all the Health Profession Magnet teachers from 2004-2008," she said. She further mentioned Mr. Douglas, Dr. Greenwood, Mrs. Peggy Penn, Mr. Mathis, Mr. Urban, and Mr. Lamb as significant educators who contributed to her development.

Discussing challenges faced during her education at IPS, Carpenter noted the stigma that township schools provided a higher quality of education compared to IPS schools. "It wasn’t until my freshman year in college I understood how valuable the skills I learned at IPS were top notch," she remarked.

Carpenter’s journey post-graduation has been non-traditional and filled with personal milestones and setbacks. "I got married young, had a child, got a divorce, worked different jobs over the years to provide," she shared candidly. Despite these challenges, Carpenter decided to return to school in 2022 for a better future for herself and her children.

"My oldest daughter Faith is now an IPS student," Carpenter added when asked about staying connected with the IPS community. She emphasized perseverance and remembering one's roots as key advice for current students: "No matter where life takes you, never forget your dreams, and never forget where you come from."

In sharing her story, Carpenter hopes to inspire others and particularly single mothers striving towards their goals.
