Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) is introducing students to the rapidly growing sport of pickleball, thanks to a collaboration with the Indianapolis Pickleball Club (IPC) and Vamos Pickleball.
IPS students from various schools will receive their first lessons on Saturday mornings over the next month at the IPC, located at 1650 Industry Drive. The program is part of the IPS curriculum, providing students with an opportunity to engage in a popular sport they might not otherwise experience outside of school, according to Kathy Langdon, the district’s physical education and health coach.
Langdon emphasized that students should embrace the sport due to its accessibility and the valuable life skills it imparts. “The program also encourages collaboration between community partners and parents, fostering a supportive environment for students to thrive,” she said. “Pickleball’s emphasis on strategic thinking allows students who may not be the most athletic to excel by outthinking their opponents, making it a sport where brains often triumph over brawn.”
As pickleball continues to gain popularity across the U.S., with participation growing by nearly 40% between 2021 and 2022, IPS is positioning its students at the forefront of this trend. “The psychological and social benefits of the sport, combined with the opportunity for physical activity and fun, make it an excellent addition to the school’s offerings,” Langdon added. “This initiative is just one more way IPS is committed to providing diverse and engaging opportunities for its students.”
