Morgan County schools have received over $233,600 for safety upgrades through the state's Secured School Safety Grant Program. The program is supported by State Representatives Craig Haggard (R-Mooresville) and Peggy Mayfield (R-Martinsville).
Haggard stated that the funding is part of the state's biennial budget passed in 2023, which made significant investments in school safety. A total of 499 schools across Indiana's 92 counties received $24 million in state matching grants.
"Effective school safety requires a combination of strong policies, well-trained personnel and the right technology," Haggard said. "This funding gives schools the flexibility to address their specific safety challenges and ensure student and staff are protected."
The local schools receiving grants include:
- Eminence Community School Corp.: $34,500
- Metropolitan School District of Martinsville: $81,000
- Mooresville Christian Academy: $26,109
- Mooresville Consolidated School Corporation: $63,679
- Tabernacle Christian School: $28,350
Mayfield highlighted that awarded funds can be used for various safety needs such as support for resource officers, equipment and technology, active-event warning systems, threat assessments, and student and parent support services programs. Since its inception in 2013, Indiana has allocated $187 million for school safety matching grants.
"Supporting school safety means giving schools the resources they need to prepare for and respond to potential threats," Mayfield said. "These grants help schools implement the most effective safety measures, from new technology to additional training for staff and resource officers."
