Maria De Leon, a graduate of Crispus Attucks High School in 2019, credits her recognition as one of the Indianapolis Business Journal’s “20 in Their 20s” to the lessons she learned while enrolled in Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS). These lessons have guided her through various chapters of her life.
On Aug. 13, the news organization unveiled its fourth annual class of “20 in Their 20s,” a group of emerging leaders in central Indiana poised to shape the state’s economy and communities for years to come. This group includes entrepreneurs, engineers, volunteers, and social justice advocates who are making significant impacts early in their careers.
IBJ also recognized De Leon for founding Indy Networking in 2023. The organization serves as a hub for networking events, empowering individuals to build authentic connections and leverage them to achieve their professional aspirations.
“This recognition celebrates emerging leaders in business, the arts, culture, philanthropy, and community service,” De Leon said. “Indianapolis is a city rich with opportunities to give back or to create something where there’s a gap. I hope people are inspired to serve their communities and realize how their unique strengths and passions can make a lasting impact.”
De Leon graduated from Butler University in 2022 and is now employed as a human resources associate at Eli Lilly and Co. She noted that her journey in community service began when she co-founded the NO MORE club at Crispus Attucks High School in partnership with the Domestic Violence Prevention Network (DVPN).
“Today, Crispus Attucks students continue to serve as youth advocates with DVPN after almost 10 years. Through this initiative, I learned how to lead and advocate, recognizing that educating and engaging others in meaningful work starts with conversations, education, and awareness.”
De Leon also served as a 2022 Indianapolis 500 Festival Princess. She believes this foundation of service and leadership gave her the confidence to pursue further volunteer and leadership opportunities at Butler University.
“My early involvement in community service ignited a passion and commitment that still drives me to this day.”
