Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) is highlighting the journeys of its graduates through the IPS Alumni Spotlight, aiming to celebrate former students and their achievements. Recently, IPS spoke with Lashonda Chapman, a 1993 graduate of Arlington High School, about her experiences within the district.
Chapman, known as "Giggles" during her school years for her constant laughter, has been running Zellas Magic Touch—a residential and commercial cleaning service in Indianapolis—for the past 18 years. She shared insights into how IPS influenced her educational foundation and career.
“IPS was a family for me,” Chapman stated. Having moved to Indianapolis from Alabama at age 12, she recalled that at John Marshall Middle School, “there were no awkward moments of getting to know people because everyone was extremely fun to be around.”
Chapman highlighted Mrs. Jackie Greenwood as a significant influence during her time at IPS. “Mrs. Jackie Greenwood taught us manners,” she said. Reflecting on specific skills gained at IPS, Chapman noted that being a "people person" has been invaluable in her career.
Addressing challenges faced during her school years, Chapman mentioned witnessing violence but emphasized the unity among staff and students during tough times. “IPS was a family,” she reiterated.
Chapman also discussed her involvement in initiatives aimed at improving education for current IPS students. She volunteered at an IPS meeting where she observed ongoing changes within the district. “I believe that with these changes the district will improve tremendously,” she concluded.
