The Dean Walker Farm in Clinton County recently received Hoosier Homestead centennial and sesquicentennial awards for being in operation since 1846, according to State Rep. Mark Genda (R-Frankfort) and State Sen. Brian Buchanan (R-Lebanon).
"Congratulations to the farming families who have persevered through the hardships over the last century and continue the Hoosier tradition of operating their homesteads," Genda said. "This award honors your longstanding commitment and contributions to our community and state."
Farms owned and operated by the same family for 100, 150, and 200 years can qualify for centennial, sesquicentennial, or bicentennial Hoosier Homestead awards.
"Agriculture contributes more than $35 billion to the Hoosier economy, and family farms like the Dean Walker Farm are one reason why," Buchanan said. "It takes years of commitment to make a farm successful and the Hoosier Homestead award recognizes this dedication."
This farm family was among 104 awardees recently recognized at the Indiana State Fair for their dedication to the state's agriculture industry. Hoosier Homestead ceremonies are conducted every spring and summer. The state has honored more than 6,000 farms since the award was established in 1976.
