As the NCAA celebrates its 25th anniversary in Indianapolis, the organization is marking this milestone with a significant $25,000 investment in Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS). This contribution will support nearly 1,000 middle school student-athletes across IPS middle schools during the 2024-25 school year. The funds will be directed towards implementing social and emotional learning (SEL) workshops designed to foster a sense of belonging, enhance self-confidence, and improve retention rates in both school and athletic programs.

The announcement occurred today (Aug. 13) during a celebration at the NCAA headquarters in downtown Indianapolis. Participants included:

- Mayor Joe Hogsett

- NCAA President Charlie Baker

- NCAA SVP of IECE Felicia Martin

- Indiana Sports Corp President Patrick Talty

- IPS Representatives: Superintendent Dr. Aleesia Johnson, IPS Foundation CEO Stephannie Bailey, and District Athletic Director Darren Thomas

“This contribution marks a significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to support and nurture the development of our middle school student-athletes across all seven of our middle schools,” Dr. Johnson said.

The workshops, developed in collaboration with the Positive Coaching Alliance, aim to equip student-athletes with the mental tools necessary for success not only in sports but also in academics and life.

“Our middle school student-athletes will participate in engaging sessions focused on social and emotional learning to help give them the mental tools to be successful on the field, in the classroom, and at home,” Thomas said. “It’s a major piece for us as we continue to prepare our student-athletes for success at the high school level and beyond.”

The partnership highlights the NCAA’s commitment to community engagement and the holistic development of young athletes, ensuring they have the necessary resources for success in all aspects of life.

Through this initiative, IPS is taking a significant step towards building a brighter future for its students and the broader community, Dr. Johnson said.
