As summer begins in Indiana, a range of new state laws will take effect on July 1, according to State Representative Matt Lehman (R-Berne).

Lehman noted that most new laws passed during the 2024 legislative session will be implemented starting July 1. Among these is an expansion of work-based learning opportunities for high school students. The Career Scholarship Account allows more Hoosier students to apply for internships, apprenticeships, and other work-based learning experiences. The $5,000 scholarship covers expenses such as training, career coaching, driver's education, and certification exams. More information can be found at in.gov/tos/csa or by calling 317-232-0723.

"With the increasing demand for skilled workers among Indiana employers, enabling high schoolers to explore these sought-after career paths is critical for their future," said Lehman, who co-authored the new law. "With the help of Career Scholarship Accounts, students can have more hands-on learning opportunities before graduating from high school."

Lehman also highlighted several other new laws:

Boosting Child Care Access: More low-income parents in Indiana will be eligible for safe and affordable child care that meets their needs. Full-time child care workers and those training in the field will receive assistance to cover the costs of care for their children or enroll their four-year-olds in high-quality pre-K programs.

Protecting Minors Online: Adult-oriented websites must verify users are at least 18 years old before allowing access to content. These companies are required to delete users' personal data immediately after age verification. Parents and the Indiana Attorney General's Office can pursue civil action for violations.

Increasing Election Security: To enhance election security in Indiana, officials will have additional tools to maintain accurate voter registration lists. Proof of citizenship will be required for individuals registering with temporary IDs, and first-time voters must provide proof of residency.
