In a recent development, U.S. Senator Todd Young and more than 40 Republican senators have urged Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer to proceed with a trial to consider the impeachment of Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. The senators emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “Our brave men and women at Customs and Border Protection have worked tirelessly to make our nation safer, yet with 7.5 million encounters since President Biden took office, our southern border is a national security disaster."
Highlighting the severity of the border crisis under Secretary Mayorkas, the senators pointed out that encounters in fiscal year 2023 had surged by 440% compared to fiscal year 2020, making it a "nightmare for the American people." The senators stressed the importance of upholding their constitutional duty, noting, "The House of Representatives has considered this evidence and impeached Secretary Mayorkas. Our constitutional duty requires the Senate to hold a trial."
The group of Republican senators underscored the significance of following the established impeachment process, stating, "In every previous congressional impeachment of the past 227 years, Congress has been faithful to the process set out by the framers… Never before has the Senate abandoned this duty, even when certain members believed the basis for impeachment was tenuous at best."
The letter sent to Senator Schumer was co-signed by a notable list of Republican senators, including Lindsey Graham, Ted Cruz, Mitch McConnell, Marco Rubio, and others.
