UIS Baseball Eliminated From Div. II Championships
The 2022 edition of Illinois Springfield baseball came to a close on Monday afternoon at the USA Baseball Training Complex just outside of Raleigh, N.C., as the seventh-seeded Prairie Stars came up one run short in a 3-2 loss to Rollins (Fla.) in an elimination game. The Prairie Stars concluded the season with a 48-11 overall record.
For the second straight game at the Div. II baseball championships, UIS found itself in a hole after one inning of play, as the Tars (41-16) got a first inning run on a sacrifice fly. Rollins would make it 3-0 in the home half of the third on a two-run home run by center fielder Cameron Meehan.
It would take to the eighth for the Prairie Stars to get on the board, when third baseman Zion Pettigrew mashed his 28th home run of the season deep to left field, plating Asher Bradd and cutting the Rollins lead to 3-2. However, Rollins got the next two hitters out in the eighth before setting UIS down 1-2-3 in the ninth to close out the one-run decision.
Designated hitter Hunter Phelps knocked two base hits to lead the Prairie Star offfense, including a double, while Pettigrew, Bradd, Brandon Bannon, Austin Alderman and Nick Mayerhofer added a base hit apiece. Cameron Zunkel started for UIS on the mound and pitched the first three innings before turning it over to Quinn Gudaitis (4 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 4 SO) and Mason Coon (1 IP, 1 BB, 2 SO) for five shutout innings of relief.
