The Indiana House of Representatives has approved a new piece of legislation spearheaded by State Representative Kendell Culp, a Republican from Rensselaer. This bill, known as Senate Bill 10, aims to enhance the integrity of elections and strengthen voter identification protocols.
According to reports, Indiana is among 36 states that already enforce laws mandating some degree of identification at polling stations as a measure against voter fraud. Representative Culp emphasized that Senate Bill 10 seeks to bolster election security by discontinuing the acceptance of student IDs as legitimate proof of identity for voters. This change is intended to ensure that only residents of Indiana can participate in the state's elections.
"A student ID gives very little information about the voter, only their name, university and a photo," explained Culp. "This bill would treat college students the same as other voters, ensuring they have a government-issued ID to vote, such as a driver's license."
Furthermore, the bill proposes requirements for county voter registration offices to keep their voter databases current and mandates that local health officers provide death records to these offices on a quarterly basis.
Senate Bill 10 will now proceed to the governor's office for further review and potential approval. Those interested in this legislative process can find additional details and updates at iga.in.gov.
