The Indiana General Assembly has endorsed a resolution put forth by State Representative Lori Goss-Reaves to acknowledge March 21, 2025, as World Down Syndrome Day. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that about 1 in every 775 babies in the U.S. is born with Down syndrome, making it the most common chromosomal condition.

Goss-Reaves emphasized that House Concurrent Resolution 28 aims to increase awareness, encourage inclusion, and emphasize the value of individuals with Down syndrome. "I'm proud to stand in support of World Down Syndrome Day, a cause close to my heart," said Goss-Reaves. "As a mother of a precious young man with Down syndrome, I understand firsthand the power of inclusion and the importance of celebrating every individual. With the right support, every person with Down syndrome can lead healthy and fulfilling lives while making meaningful contributions to their families and communities."

World Down Syndrome Day was first recognized by the United Nations in 2012 and is observed annually on March 21. This date symbolizes the triplication of the 21st chromosome responsible for Down syndrome.

The day is marked globally as an occasion to celebrate achievements, resilience, and aspirations of those living with Down syndrome. It honors their unique talents and contributions while recognizing the love they bring to their families and communities.
