State Representative Brad Barrett, a Republican from Richmond, has sponsored Senate Bill 176 to address the projected shortage of nearly 10,000 licensed practical nurses in Indiana by 2037. The bill aims to allow high school students to enroll in state-accredited nursing programs. According to Barrett, this initiative could help students save money on college-level courses applicable toward a future degree and provide them with professional experience earlier.

Barrett stated, "I'm proud to sponsor this bill, which will help address the nursing shortage by creating an easier process for individuals to pursue a nursing career." He added that improving access to LPN licensure and streamlining the process is an investment in Indiana's healthcare future.

The bill proposes adding two new members to the State Board of Nursing to broaden representation and ensure the board can tackle evolving challenges within the field.

Senate Bill 176 has passed both the Senate and House with bipartisan support and is now awaiting consideration by the governor. More information about sessions and committee meetings can be found at iga.in.gov.

Several Ivy Tech campuses offer programs for those pursuing an associate of science in nursing degree or enrolling in a transition-to-ASN program. Additionally, some campuses have a practical nursing technical certificate program. For further details, visit IvyTech.edu.
