Crispus Attucks High School, part of the Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS), has been recognized as an endorsed Early College High School by the Center of Excellence in Leadership of Learning (CELL) at the University of Indianapolis. This makes it the first IPS district-managed school to receive this endorsement, joining 60 other schools in Indiana.
The endorsement allows students at Crispus Attucks to graduate with a high school diploma and additional credentials such as the Indiana College Core, an associate degree, a technical credential, or 15 or more dual credits. These programs aim to ease the transition from high school to college.
In 2022, 79% of graduates from Early College High School programs pursued higher education compared to 53% of all Indiana graduates. Lauren Franklin, Principal of Crispus Attucks High School, stated: “Crispus Attucks has a proud tradition of preparing students for success beyond high school, and our long-standing partnerships with Ivy Tech and IU Health are key to that mission.” She added that their Early College program allows students to start college early while saving on tuition costs.
Early College programs are designed to enable students to earn college credits during high school. CELL endorses these programs based on adherence to eight core principles like fostering a college-going culture and providing robust student support.
To achieve this endorsement, Crispus Attucks submitted a portfolio addressing these principles. Additionally, CELL conducted interviews with stakeholders at the school before granting the endorsement.
