Casey O’Leary has been a part of Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) for six years, spending the last three at School 70. Initially joining as a Love of Reading librarian through the Roots to Read grant initiative at Meredith Nicholson School 96, she later transitioned to School 70 as Device Manager. This year, she assumed the role of Library Media Lead Teacher for IPS.

In a recent interview, O’Leary shared insights into her career and experiences within IPS. She holds a degree in elementary education from IU Bloomington and initially taught before pausing her career to raise her family. Her passion for reading led her to earn a Master of Library Science from IU Indy and a School Media Specialist certification. "I worked in public libraries for ten years before I returned to public schools," she stated.

Currently, O’Leary serves as the School Media Specialist and Device Manager at School 70, managing both the library and student devices. "We are active participants in the IndyPL Shared System," she explained, adding that she also manages four 3D printers popular with students and facilitates the Battle of the Books competition team.

O’Leary was drawn to IPS by "the opportunity to encourage students to love reading" through quality literature access provided by initiatives like Roots to Read. She remains motivated by her colleagues' support and IPS's commitment to equity and opportunity for all children.

Reflecting on her time at IPS compared to previous roles, O’Leary described it as a large organization where individual schools offer vibrant communities conducive to thriving educational environments. "I’ve been able to participate in trainings and activities that allow me to be a lifelong learner alongside my students," she said.

Her dedication is rooted in personal educational experiences across Connecticut, California, and Michigan. She believes every child deserves excellent educational opportunities: "It’s not enough to believe that; I have to be willing to get in the game."

A particularly rewarding moment came when her Battle of the Books team won the district trophy last year after competing against other IPS school teams. "I was thrilled for them and had a ball celebrating books and reading!" O’Leary exclaimed.

Discussing IPS's Rebuilding Stronger initiative, she noted its focus on equitable opportunities aligns with her values: "Change is often difficult...but I have seen students benefit from new opportunities."

For new educators or staff joining IPS, O’Leary advised: "Welcome! You have an amazing opportunity...Ask questions...and remember that taking care of yourself is the best way."
