The Indiana House of Representatives has backed a resolution sponsored by State Representative Craig Haggard, urging the Indiana Department of Transportation to rename a bridge over Big Walnut Creek on U.S. Highway 231 in honor of Capt. James Baugh, a former sheriff and Vietnam veteran from Putnam County who died in the line of duty.

"Capt. Baugh exemplified unwavering dedication to public safety and service through his 32 years with the Putnam County Sheriff's Department and as a Vietnam veteran," stated Haggard. "Renaming this bridge in his honor would ensure his legacy of sacrifice and service lives on for years to come."

In 2004, while responding to a minor property-damage accident, Baugh lost control of his patrol car on U.S. 231, which overturned into Big Walnut Creek. He was taken to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis where he later died from his injuries, just four months before his planned retirement.

Baugh was originally from Morgan County and graduated from Belle Union High School. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War before joining law enforcement with the Greencastle Police Department and later transferring to the Putnam County Sheriff's Department. His career spanned various roles including serving as sheriff from 1975 to 1982, eventually achieving the rank of captain.

Senate Concurrent Resolution 11 successfully passed both the Indiana Senate and House unanimously. With this approval, INDOT can proceed with renaming efforts once all legislative processes are completed.
