Indiana's Community Crossings Matching Grant Program has allocated over $5.5 million in state funding to local communities for road and bridge projects, according to legislators from St. Joseph County. This initiative aims to support road reconstruction, bridge preservation, intersection improvements, and other infrastructure projects across Indiana.

State Rep. Dale DeVon (R-Granger) highlighted the program's role in upgrading roadways and bridges annually, stating, "These repairs are critical to keeping motorists safe and improving our local infrastructure." Indiana recently received recognition as the top state for overall road conditions by ConsumerAffairs.

The latest round of grants will benefit 245 communities throughout Indiana with more than $200 million in state matching funds. Local recipients include New Carlisle with $1 million, Osceola receiving $457,612, South Bend awarded $1.5 million, St. Joseph County also granted $1.5 million, and Walkerton with a $1 million allocation.

State Rep. Jake Teshka (R-North Liberty) emphasized the importance of these funds for daily commuting needs and economic development: "Whether it's work, school or running errands, we rely on our roads every single day."

To qualify for funding under this program, smaller municipalities must match 25 percent of the grant with local funds while larger communities are required to provide a 50 percent match. Since its inception in 2016, Community Crossings has distributed over $2 billion for local road and bridge improvements.

"The funding from this program will be put to good use for local infrastructure upgrades," said State Rep. Tim Wesco (R-Osceola). He noted that previously paused projects or new improvements can now proceed thanks to this additional financial support.
