Indiana's Community Crossings Matching Grant Program has allocated over $2.5 million to local communities for road and bridge projects, Monroe County legislators announced. This initiative supports road reconstruction, bridge preservation, intersection improvements, and other projects. A total of 245 Indiana communities will benefit from more than $200 million in state matching grants this year.
"Road maintenance and improvements are a key part of ensuring our communities remain safe and accessible," said State Representative Peggy Mayfield from Martinsville. She emphasized the funding's role in facilitating crucial projects that improve daily travel and foster economic growth.
Consumer Affairs recently ranked Indiana as the top state for overall road conditions, citing low traffic fatality rates and high-quality roads. Grant recipients in the area include Bloomington with $760,262, Ellettsville receiving $258,181, Monroe County awarded $1.5 million, and Stinesville getting $69,777.
"Our rural and small-town roads are lifelines for residents, farmers and businesses," stated State Representative Dave Hall from Norman. He highlighted the importance of securing funding to complete essential road improvements that enhance safety and support economic development.
State Representative Bob Heaton from Terre Haute explained that smaller municipalities must provide a 25 percent match in local funds to qualify for funding, while larger communities need a 50 percent match. Additionally, 50 percent of available matching funds must be awarded annually to communities within counties with populations of 50,000 or less. Since its inception in 2016, Community Crossings has distributed over $2 billion to enhance local roads and bridges.
"These grants provide an opportunity for our local governments to address critical infrastructure needs," Heaton noted. "Whether it's repaving roads or improving bridges, this investment will strengthen our communities and better serve Hoosiers."
