Indiana's Community Crossings Matching Grant Program has allocated over $3.5 million in state funding for local road and bridge projects, according to State Representatives Matt Commons (R-Williamsport) and Kendell Culp (R-Rensselaer). This initiative supports local communities with funds for road reconstruction, bridge preservation, intersection improvements, and other infrastructure projects.
In 2025, a total of 245 Indiana communities will benefit from more than $200 million in state matching grants. "Not every area has the resources or funds to take on major road and bridge projects that could bring economic growth," said Commons. "Community Crossings grants give communities and towns the additional support needed to attract new business and opportunities to rural areas."
Consumer Affairs recently ranked Indiana as the best state in the nation for overall road conditions, highlighting its low rate of traffic fatalities and quality roads.
Local grant recipients include Brookston receiving $368,427; Monticello with over $1.3 million; White County at $1.5 million; and Wolcott obtaining $257,367.
Culp explained that smaller municipalities must provide a 25 percent match in local funds to qualify for funding, while larger communities need a 50 percent match. The program mandates that 50 percent of available matching funds be awarded annually to communities within counties with populations of 50,000 or less. Since its inception in 2016, Community Crossings has distributed more than $2 billion for local road and bridge improvements.
"Bridge and road maintenance can be a large undertaking for a rural town or city," Culp stated. "With this funding, we can not only keep roadways safe but also kickstart infrastructure projects to connect communities."
