Indiana's Community Crossings Matching Grant Program has allocated over $2.1 million to Clay County for road and bridge projects, according to State Representatives Bob Heaton and Tim Yocum. The program supports local communities with funding for infrastructure improvements, including road reconstruction and bridge preservation.
This year, 245 communities in Indiana will receive more than $200 million in state matching grants. Consumer Affairs recently ranked Indiana as the top state for overall road conditions, citing low traffic fatalities and high-quality roads.
"These grants provide an opportunity for our local governments to address critical infrastructure needs," stated Heaton. "Whether it's repaving roads or improving bridges, this investment will strengthen our communities and better serve Hoosiers."
Specific allocations include Brazil receiving $616,401, Clay County $1.5 million, Harmony $9,494, and Staunton $71,387.
Yocum explained that smaller municipalities must match 25 percent of the funds locally while larger ones need a 50 percent match. Half of the available matching funds are designated annually for communities in counties with populations of 50,000 or less. Since its inception in 2016, Community Crossings has awarded over $2 billion to enhance local infrastructure.
"Maintaining and improving our roads is critical to the safety and success of our local counties and cities," Yocum emphasized. "These grants provide strong foundations for making lasting improvements that benefit all Hoosiers."
