The Indiana House of Representatives has passed a bill authored by State Representative Craig Haggard aimed at enhancing the state's defenses against foreign influence. House Bill 1032 seeks to close existing loopholes that allow adversarial entities to establish a presence in Indiana.
"House Bill 1032 is another crucial step in protecting Indiana from foreign influence by closing loopholes that allow adversarial entities to gain a foothold in our state," said Haggard. "By tightening restrictions on contracts, property ownership and financial ties, we're prioritizing Hoosiers' interests and strengthening our state's security. I'm proud to support this legislation and look forward to seeing it move through the process."
The proposed legislation targets countries identified as foreign adversaries, including China, Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Russia, and Venezuela. It aims to prohibit individuals or entities affiliated with these nations from entering into contracts with the state. Additionally, it seeks to limit foreign ownership of businesses within Indiana and enhance transparency regarding foreign connections with educational institutions. Violations of the bill would result in civil penalties enforced by the state.
Having cleared both the House Judiciary Committee and House Ways and Means Committee, House Bill 1032 now advances to the Senate for further deliberation. For more information about the bill and legislative sessions, visit iga.in.gov.
