State Representative Kyle Pierce of Anderson has co-authored legislation to ensure that cash payment options are available at school extracurricular activities and events, including athletic events. The new requirement is set to begin in July 2025.

"By requiring a cash payment option at school events, we are taking a simple step toward ensuring that all families can attend and participate, regardless of their preferred method of payment," Pierce stated. "This bill helps make our schools more welcoming and accessible to everyone."

A study by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau indicates that school districts are increasingly moving towards cashless operations. House Bill 1064 aims to counter this trend by mandating that school corporations offer a cash payment option for all extracurricular activities and events where an admission fee is charged, starting on July 1, 2025. This measure seeks to accommodate individuals who prefer or need to pay with cash, especially in rural areas where electronic payment systems might not be readily available.

"Access to school events should never be limited by how you choose to pay," added Pierce. "I’m proud to stand behind a bill that prioritizes inclusivity and convenience for our families."

Pierce also noted that the legislation would empower parental choice, allowing families to choose schools that best meet their child's needs without restrictive policies. Additionally, the bill promotes fairness by removing prohibitions on transfers for athletic reasons, ensuring equal treatment under school transfer policies.

According to Pierce, current IHSAA policies include providing a cash payment option for tournaments. House Bill 1064 would extend this requirement to more events.

The bill has passed the House and now awaits further consideration in the Senate. For additional information or to watch session and committee meetings live, visit iga.in.gov.
