State Representative Shane Lindauer has introduced House Bill 1615, aiming to bolster military base infrastructure in Indiana. The proposed legislation seeks to create the Indiana Military Base Infrastructure Grant Program. This program would finance physical infrastructure projects at current or potential military bases across the state.
Lindauer explained that the bill is intended to boost military readiness, stimulate economic growth, and support defense-related industries. "By further developing these bases, we would not only be supporting servicemembers but also strengthening Indiana's position as a hub for defense operations and technological growth," he stated. He emphasized that proactive enhancements could demonstrate Indiana's commitment to military infrastructure, potentially safeguarding it from impacts of the Base Realignment and Closure process.
The bill proposes a framework for the Indiana Defense Task Force and the Indiana Economic Development Corporation to manage the grant program. However, any project funding must first receive approval from the Indiana State Budget Agency.
Additionally, technology parks located within designated military base enhancement areas that maintain certification could qualify for an annual incremental income tax deposit of up to $500,000 under this legislation.
House Bill 1615 has moved past the House Veterans Affairs and Public Safety Committee and is now with the House Ways and Means Committee for further evaluation. More information about session proceedings can be accessed through iga.in.gov.
