As a Marine veteran and member of the House Veterans Affairs and Public Safety Committee, Rep. Haggard emphasizes the need for support for Hoosier veterans transitioning back to civilian life. He highlights the challenges faced by many veterans, including homelessness.
Rep. Haggard expresses pride in supporting the Indiana House of Representatives' collaboration with Helping Veterans and Families of Indiana (HVAF) during the 2025 legislative session. The initiative aims to collect essential items and monetary donations at the Statehouse through March to aid HVAF's efforts against veteran homelessness in Indiana. This support follows a fire that displaced 48 veterans at one of HVAF's facilities last fall.
Statistics show about 500 Hoosier veterans experience homelessness annually. Nationally, more than 35,000 veterans were homeless on a single night in January 2023, according to a report from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
"Ending veteran homelessness takes all of us," states Rep. Haggard, urging colleagues and citizens to participate in this effort by donating or visiting https://www.hvafofindiana.org/donate-state-rep/. Donation bins are available outside the House Chamber on the third floor and in the south atrium of the fourth floor at the Statehouse.
The goal is to ensure that every struggling veteran in Indiana receives necessary support to rebuild their lives.
