State Representative Ethan Lawson, a Republican from Greenfield, has co-authored two significant pieces of legislation aimed at enhancing support for veterans and Indiana National Guard members. The bills have successfully passed the House and are now moving to the Senate for further consideration.

House Bill 1111 proposes to increase benefits and protections for Indiana National Guard members. It includes provisions for enhanced state-provided benefits in case of death in the line of duty and expands workers' compensation eligibility along with medical insurance options for soldiers and airmen on state active duty. Additionally, it aims to broaden scholarship opportunities under the National Guard's tuition supplement program, allowing funds to be used for credentialing, trade certifications, and apprenticeship programs.

"As the grandson of a veteran and having been an employee of the Indiana National Guard, I’ve witnessed the dedication and sacrifice of those who serve," Lawson stated. "Our veterans and service members deserve our support, both during and after their time in uniform. I am proud to co-author these bills and strengthen resources and protections for our service members, veterans, and their families."

House Bill 1670 seeks to establish the Veteran Empowerment Act. This legislation targets claim sharks who exploit veterans by overcharging them when applying for VA benefits. It aims to enhance oversight to protect veterans from fraudulent claims. Lawson mentioned discussions with Hancock County Veteran Service Officer Bob Workman and former Greenfield Mayor Chuck Fewell about the necessity of legislative action.

The bill stipulates that those assisting or advising veterans on benefits must not use international call centers or data centers for processing personal information. They are prohibited from using a veteran's personal log-in details without permission and must undergo a national criminal history background check before accessing sensitive information.

Both House Bill 1111 and House Bill 1670 received bipartisan support in the House. Further information on these bills can be accessed by visiting iga.in.gov.
