The Indiana House has approved legislation introduced by State Representative Kyle Pierce aimed at enhancing the state's campaign finance system. The proposed law, House Bill 1643, seeks to update definitions, improve electronic filing processes, and eliminate outdated requirements.

A significant aspect of the bill is the creation of a campaign finance database managed by the Indiana Election Division. This database will facilitate the electronic submission, retrieval, storage, and disclosure of campaign finance reports for local office and school board candidates across Indiana. According to Pierce, "This bill strengthens public trust by ensuring campaign finance information is more accessible and accurate."

House Bill 1643 also proposes changes to recognize certain property donations via payment platforms as campaign contributions. It would allow election officials to send specific required notices through email, potentially reducing mailing costs.

Pierce expressed confidence in the proposed updates: "Candidates and voters deserve a system that is straightforward, reliable and safe," he said. He emphasized that these changes align with modern technology while maintaining transparency.

Having passed in the House, the bill will now proceed to the Senate for further evaluation. Additional details on this legislative process can be accessed through iga.in.gov.
